Autobiography of Theodore Roosevelt (Optimized for Kindle) Overview

Theodore Roosevelt’s writing has the same verve, panache, and energy as the life he lived. Perhaps no president in U.S. history—not even Jefferson—had so many opinions and intellectual interests, believed in so many causes, or worked so hard to translate his beliefs into action. A hard-headed idealist, an unabashed interventionist, a crusader on behalf of environmental preservation and against big business ”trusts,” he was also a writer of uncommon grace and passion with a gift for the memorable phrase. His autobiography, one of the two or three finest ever written by a U.S. president, abounds in exciting episodes of personal transformation and insights into the bitter politics of the day. Roosevelt was a sickly youth who steeled himself for a life of vigor, growing up surrounded by wealth in nineteenth-century Manhattan but vacationing in the West, where he rode with cowboys and learned to revere and study the natural world. His book describes his early failures in his political career and his ascent from the New York City police board to assistant secretary of the Navy where he advocated war with Spain, to his brief stint and public renown as a Rough Rider; and on to the governorship of New York, vice presidency under McKinley, and finally the presidency itself. Elting Morison’s new introduction analyzes what Roosevelt has included—and not included—about his many political conflicts, his role in the acquisition of the Panama Canal, and the deaths of his wife and his mother. As everywhere in his writing, the personality of T.R.—alert, voluble, forceful, compassionate—shines forth from this book, which remains a singular study of a dynamic and, in many respects, exemplary man who was also a key figure in the Age of Reform.

Alive Overview

On October 12, 1972, an Uruguayan Air Force plane carrying a team of rugby players crashed in the remote snowy peaks of the Andes. Ten weeks later, only sixteen of the forty-five passengers were found alive. This is the story of those ten weeks spent in the shelter of the plane's fuselage without food and with scarcely any hope of a rescue. The survivors protected and helped one another, and came to the difficult conclusion that to live meant doing the unimaginable. Confronting nature at its most furious, two brave young men risked their lives to hike through the mountains looking for help -- and ultimately found it.

This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

The Tree Where Man Was Born (Penguin Classics) Overview

A timeless and majestic portrait of Africa by the National Book Award-winning author of The Snow Leopard, now with a new introduction by Jane Goodall.

A finalist for the National Book Award when it was released in 1972, this vivid portrait of East Africa remains as fresh and revelatory now as on the day it was first published. Peter Matthiessen exquisitely combines nature and travel writing to portray the sights, scenes, and people he observed firsthand in several trips over the course of a dozen years. From the daily lives of wild herdsmen and the drama of predator kills to the field biologists investigating wild creatures and the anthropologists seeking humanity's origins in the rift valley, The Tree Where Man Was Born is a classic of journalistic observation.

The Discovery of France: A Historical Geography, from the Revolution to the First World War Overview

A narrative of exploration—full of strange landscapes and even stranger inhabitants—that explains the enduring fascination of France.

While Gustave Eiffel was changing the skyline of Paris, large parts of France were still terra incognita. Even in the age of railways and newspapers, France was a land of ancient tribal divisions, prehistoric communication networks, and pre-Christian beliefs. French itself was a minority language.

Graham Robb describes that unknown world in arresting narrative detail. He recounts the epic journeys of mapmakers, scientists, soldiers, administrators, and intrepid tourists, of itinerant workers, pilgrims, and herdsmen with their millions of migratory domestic animals. We learn how France was explored, charted, and colonized, and how the imperial influence of Paris was gradually extended throughout a kingdom of isolated towns and villages.

The Discovery of France explains how the modern nation came to be and how poorly understood that nation still is today. Above all, it shows how much of France—past and present—remains to be discovered.

Secret Stairs: A Walking Guide to the Historic Staircases of Los Angeles Overview

In a city known for its fast cars and freeways, this guide reveals a unique feature of the Los Angeles cityscape: more than 200 stairways across the hilly sections of the city, many of which are remnants from the days when most city residents depended on streetcars and buses for transportation. Containing more than 40 walks and detailed maps, this handbook highlights the charms and quirks of this quintessential feature of Los Angeles’ development and chronicles the geographical, architectural, and historical features of each staircase and the neighborhoods in which the steps are located. Rated for duration and difficulty, the circular walks deliver tales of historic homes, their fascinating inhabitants, and troves of historic trivia—such as where William Faulkner lived while he wrote the screenplay for To Have and Have Not, where Graham Nash lived, and where actress Thelma Todd was murdered—while other walks highlight spectacular homes by some of southern California's most important architects, including Neutra and Schindler. From strolling through the classic La Loma neighborhood in Pasadena and walking the vintage Red Car Loop in Silver Lake to taking the Beachwood Canyon Hollywoodland hike and enjoying the magnificent ocean views from the Castellammare district in Pacific Palisades, these staircases present a new way for urban explorers to discover a little-known side of the City of Angels.

Blind Descent: The Quest to Discover the Deepest Place on Earth Overview

The deepest cave on earth was a prize that had remained unclaimed for centuries, long after every other ultimate discovery had been made: both poles by 1912, Everest in 1958, the Challenger Deep in 1961. In 1969 we even walked on the moon. And yet as late as 2000, the earth’s deepest cave—the supercave—remained undiscovered. This is the story of the men and women who risked everything to find it, earning their place in history beside the likes of Peary, Amundsen, Hillary, and Armstrong.

In 2004, two great scientist-explorers are attempting to find the bottom of the world. Bold, heroic American Bill Stone is committed to the vast Cheve Cave, located in southern Mexico and deadly even by supercave standards. On the other side of the globe, legendary Ukrainian explorer Alexander Klimchouk—Stone’s polar opposite in temperament and style, but every bit his equal in scientific expertise, physical bravery, and sheer determination—has targeted Krubera, a freezing nightmare of a supercave in the Republic of Georgia, where underground dangers are compounded by the horrors of separatist war in this former Soviet republic.

Blind Descent explores both the brightest and darkest aspects of the timeless human urge to discover—to befirst. It is also a thrilling epic about a pursuit that makes even extreme mountaineering and ocean exploration pale by comparison. These supercavers spent months in multiple camps almost two vertical miles deep and many more miles from their caves’ exits. They had to contend with thousand-foot drops, deadly flooded tunnels, raging whitewater rivers, monstrous waterfalls, mile-long belly crawls, and much more. Perhaps even worse were the psychological horrors produced by weeks plunged into absolute, perpetual darkness, beyond all hope of rescue, including a particularly insidious derangement called The Rapture.

James M. Tabor was granted unprecedented access to logs, journals, photographs, and video footage of these expeditions, as well as many hours of personal interviews with surviving participants. Blind Descent is an unforgettable addition to the classic literature of discovery and adventure. It is also a testament to human survival and endurance—and to two extraordinary men whose relentless pursuit of greatness led them to heights of triumph and depths of tragedy neither could have imagined.

A Time of Gifts: On Foot to Constantinople: From the Hook of Holland to the Middle Danube (New York Review Books Classics) Overview

At the age of eighteen, Patrick Leigh Fermor set off from the heart of London on an epic journey—to walk to Constantinople. A Time of Gifts is the rich and sparkling account of his adventures as far as Hungary, after which Between the Woods and the Water continues the story to the Iron Gates that divide the Carpathian and Balkan mountains. Acclaimed for its sweep and intelligence, Leigh Fermor's book explores a remarkable moment in time. Hitler has just come to power but war is still ahead, as he walks through a Europe soon to be forever changed—through the Lowlands to Mitteleuropa, to Teutonic and Slav heartlands, through the baroque remains of the Holy Roman Empire, up the Rhine and down to the Danube.

At once a memoir of coming-of-age, an account of a journey, and a dazzling exposition of the English language, A Time of Gifts is also a portrait of a continent already showing ominous signs of the holocaust to come.

Tales Of The Alhambra Overview

Tales of the Alhambra is a collection of essays, verbal sketches, and stories by Washington Irving.

Shortly after completing a biography of Christopher Columbus in 1828, Washington Irving traveled from Madrid, where he had been staying, to Granada, Spain. At first sight, he described it as "a most picturesque and beautiful city, situated in one of the loveliest landscapes that I have ever seen." Irving was preparing a book called A Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada, a history of the years 1478–1492, and was continuing his research on the topic. He immediately asked the then-governor of the historic Alhambra Palace as well as the archbishop of Granada for access to the palace, which was granted because of Irving's celebrity status. Aided by a 17-year old guide named Mateo Ximenes, Irving was inspired by his experience to write Tales of the Alhambra. Throughout his trip, he filled his notebooks and journals with descriptions and observations though he did not believe his writing would ever do it justice. He wrote, "How unworthy is my scribbling of the place." Irving continued to travel through Spain until he was appointed as secretary of legation at the United States Embassy in London, serving under the incoming minister Louis McLane. He arrived in London by late September 1829. -- from Wikipedia

Democracy In America, Volume 2 Overview

In Democracy in America, published in 1835, Tocqueville wrote of the New World and its burgeoning democratic order. Observing from the perspective of a detached social scientist, Tocqueville wrote of his travels through America in the early 19th Century when the market revolution, Western expansion, and Jacksonian democracy were radically transforming the fabric of American life. He saw democracy as an equation that balanced liberty and equality, concern for the individual as well as the community.

Alexis-Charles-Henri Clérel de Tocqueville (July 29, 1805 – April 16, 1859) was a French political thinker and historian best known for his Democracy in America (appearing in two volumes: 1835 and 1840) and The Old Regime and the Revolution (1856). In both of these works, he explored the effects of the rising equality of social conditions on the individual and the state in western societies. Democracy in America (1835), his major work, published after his travels in the United States, is today considered an early work of sociology and political science. An eminent representative of the classical liberal political tradition, Tocqueville was an active participant in French politics, first under the July Monarchy (1830–1848) and then during the Second Republic (1849–1851) which succeeded the February 1848 Revolution. He retired from political life after Louis Napoléon Bonaparte's December 2, 1851 coup, and thereafter began work on The Old Regime and the Revolution, Volume I.- Wikipedia

The Finest Hours: The True Story of the U.S. Coast Guard's Most Daring Sea Rescue Overview

The true story of an incredible disaster and heroic rescue at sea told by two masterful storytellers

In the winter of 1952, New England was battered by the most brutal nor'easter in years. As the weather wreaked havoc on land, the freezing Atlantic became a wind-whipped zone of peril.

In the early hours of Monday, February 18, while the storm raged, two oil tankers, the Pendleton and the Fort Mercer, found themselves in the same horrifying predicament. Built with "dirty steel," and not prepared to withstand such ferocious seas, both tankers split in two, leaving the dozens of men on board utterly at the Atlantic's mercy.

The Finest Hours is the gripping, true story of the valiant attempt to rescue the souls huddling inside the broken halves of the two ships. Coast Guard cutters raced to the aid of those on the Fort Mercer, and when it became apparent that the halves of the Pendleton were in danger of capsizing, the Guard sent out two thirty-six-foot lifeboats as well. These wooden boats, manned by only four seamen, were dwarfed by the enormous seventy-foot seas. As the tiny rescue vessels set out from the coast of Cape Cod, the men aboard were all fully aware that they were embarking on what could easily become a suicide mission.

The spellbinding tale is overflowing with breathtaking scenes that sear themselves into the mind's eye, as boats capsize, bows and sterns crash into one another, and men hurl themselves into the raging sea in their terrifying battle for survival.

Not all of the eighty-four men caught at sea in the midst of that brutal storm survived, but considering the odds, it's a miracle -- and a testament to their bravery -- that any came home to tell their tales at all.

Michael J. Tougias and Casey Sherman have seamlessly woven together their extensive research and firsthand interviews to create an unforgettable tale of heroism, triumph, and tragedy, one that truly tells of the Coast Guard's finest hours.

In birding jargon, is a great year one year, which aims to see as many birds as you can. Naturalist and writer Robert M. Pyle, a butterfly lover way back, got the idea to a great year for butterflies, and in 2008 it did. Mariposa Road is the story of the Great Year Pyle butterfly, in which he travels the United States (including Hawaii and Alaska) to see with the goal of at least 500 different species of butterflies. Along the way you aresupported by many fans to support its objectives and any number of citizens whose many courtesies he regularly documents. If he can not reach the magic 500? You must read the book to find out, but when you touch it, you're missing the point - Pyle's real goal is to celebrate the love of nature and butterflies: their own, and in general.

This book recalls Pyle classic picaresque novel Chasing Re: Migrating with the Butterflies of passage, in which he wrote the Pylehis adventures back edge of the monarch butterfly's annual migration from north to south. There, as here, his gentle observations about people and places along the way and his low-budget travel (usually with the same decades-old Honda Civic) blend with enthusiastic descriptions of his time in the industry and beautiful insects located there. But with more than 500 pages Mariposa Road King Chasing is much longer. While both books are basically chronological accounts of different events,Happen until the end point is reached, but it seemed nice and Chasing Monarchs gradually decreased Mariposa Road goes on, the same charming style begins to appear, the book cumbersome. My proposal is therefore not to miss the book - would be a shame, Pyle is a quiet, poetic language, the observation of intelligent escape, and his infectious enthusiasm - but to break a bit '. Pyle divides the book into "radiation" - sections on various expeditions throughout the year which is big -10 to 50 pages long. I think I liked it better if this book, I followed his example and had read a "beam" in a short time, among other books.

Of course I'm not really the target of this book, because I'm not a fan of butterfly and read Pyle's work, especially for the travelogue aspect. My joy in his work - and I've never seen a book, Pyle was found not worth reading, the man is a wonderful writer - probably triple or quadruple, if I have aNaturalist or researcher butterfly. Those of you who read his work more for the trip report and I hope you know who you are absorbed like to read this book, as Pyle was unclear how he lived, and probably able to read it straight and love it. For the rest of us, time spent with Pyle's worth the time, but I recommend his book in a nutshell.

Mariposa Road: The First Butterfly Big Year Overview

Part road-trip tale, part travelogue of lost and found landscapes, all good-natured natural history, Mariposa Road tracks Bob Pyle’s journey across the United States as he races against the calendar
in his search for as many of the 800 American butterflies as he can find.

Like Pyle’s classic Chasing Monarchs,Mariposa Road recounts his adventures, high and low, in tracking down butterflies in his own low-tech, individual way. Accompanied by Marsha, his cottonwood-limb butterfly net; Powdermilk, his 1982 Honda Civic with 345,000 miles on the odometer; and the small Leitz binoculars he has carried for more than thirty years, Bob ventured out in a series of remarkable trips from his Northwest home.

From the California coastline in company with overwintering monarchs to the Far Northern tundra in pursuit of mysterious sulphurs and arctics; from the zebras and daggerwings of the Everglades to the leafwings, bluewings, and border rarities of the lower Rio Grande; from Graceland to ranchland and Kauai to Key West, these intimate encounters with the land, its people, and its fading fauna are wholly original. At turns whimsical, witty, informative, and inspirational, Mariposa Road is an extraordinary journey of discovery that leads the reader ever farther into butterfly country and deeper into the heart of the naturalist.

My work includes the visit of the world's most important shipwrecks. While I can not for the treasures major tourist attractions in the places you can visit to find, I need local information, which tells me where to eat and sleep. They are therefore just as likely that the same information discussed in some out-of-the-art port as any visitor.

For many years, I have consulted many books guides the visitor's request. Because I have neither the time nor thePatience for false, misleading, out-of-date or simply incorrect information that has most of these so-called leaders over the trash. Not so with the Lonely Planet and this is as good as it gets.

In short, fully recommended. Just make sure you have the latest edition.

Ah, the adventure and excitement is coming to visit a country with a past as their exotic and modern at the same time.

The isthmus of Panama, just 50 km wide in some areas was intended to be a transit point intermediaries both oceans. At the beginning of 1500, Vasco Nunez de Balboa treked through the isthmus and discovedred what he called the South Seas, later renamed the Pacific Ocean by others for its relatively calm waters - especially compared to the turbulent Atlantic.

Soon after Francisco Pizarro marched on the same land mass close, sailed along the coast and captured the unfortunate Inca Empire. Millions of dollars in gold, silver and precious stones was stolen, the Spaniards and carried by mule to Panama and then shipped to Europe.

After sailing 1848 California gold rush, thousands would come from New York, New Orleans, etc. pay a dollar to be on the isthmus on foot. In 1855 a railway line connectedboth oceans. Later, the French tried to build a canal - and failed. In 1903, after a canal treaty between Colombia and the United States negotiated could be ratified in Bogota, the impatient Theodore Roosevelt took over the situation and helped to separate Panama from Colombia. had in the previous 80 years Panama has been trying to do more than 80 times. The riots were always put down, with the support of the United States. But in 1903 the tables were turned. The Republic of Panama was born.
Independence led to the construction of one of the engineering marvels of the modern world: the Panama Canal, which opened in August 1914. Adventure that is Panama.

I've run out of space. In short, Panama is a fascinating country at different levels. Brother William has written several books about Panama. He lived for many years. He is a careful researcher, and reflective. This book is the best guide for beginners and seasoned travelers. His comments,Maps and the author's sense of humor make reading this book a useful and beautiful.

We are planning a short trip to Singapore and I found this book to be very good to highlight the things that were a must and that it was a waste of time. It also had lists of very good things, like food indeginous (and what makes them), language barriers (section a lot of fun) things to look at, etc. Also had a great overview of food to eat where and what was not worth it. He put the things that have to do a day trip was good and the need to take a trip of 3-4 days.

II definitely liked this book about some other travel books I've read. It has a very personal touch (some amusing anicdotes) and a good perspective on things.

Have relatively little to say about the history of Eric Hobsbawm "dual revolutions" (Industrial and French) because I'm pretty sure that I have just finished the first act of the morning. Hobsbawm appears to have the world in which we live now seen as a consequence of the double revolution, and it turns out his story slowly and carefully. The first volume treats the period from the beginning of the revolution, the logical culmination in the revolutions of 1848. The way in which he says Hobsbawmwere given to these revolutions, in a sense inevitable, as the French and Industrial revolutions play. The lives of the poor in the industrial city grew unbearable, he made the bourgeoisie as a class and power, the liberal policy, there are men like colliding atoms on the market, began his search for the unique design of the political right to be watching materialistic world, the only socially acceptable, industry and the rise of science, it is powered, art - in the persona Ruskin say - rebelled violently, and the dance continued throughout his perfection of form, in Karl Marx. (Says the man who has not read Marx embarrassment).

If I'm reading Hobsbawm, forced the mechanics of the twin revolutions going on all this, and forced its dissolution in 1848. His knowledge of history, is in the dirty details of their depth in this inevitability for him too far, but it seems in general terms, he believes that revolutions created doubleTensions that could only be resolved in a way. The powder keg exploded in the last sentence of this volume, a better joke, I refer to the second could not be developed.

Hobsbawm has a certain style that I do not pin down exactly, but it is difficult in many ways to penetrate. First, the mass of evidence makes impressive. But it's all in the form of drawings, with very few quotes from real people. This may be partly because I know the things that everyone expectseducated person should know if the latest reading has taught me anything, it is that I'm not particularly well educated.

An educated person should also address the situation, highly recursive structure of its paragraphs. He is a writer very top-down: He is the general point he wants to do, then dive into the details of each pause and refer to them in sub-paragraphs. He uses this for a couple of levels, and if you carefully you can connect them all. does not prose Hobsbawmneed to remind you where you started, as it moved along, leaving you.

stand the book would be better known, and this player would be happier if the most-to-read music at the end of each section were a for-further-reading, as the twin revolutions influenced the art, for example, it would be nice . As it stands, the book-crammed all the recommendations of the previous postscript, I did not know were there until maybe 2 / 3 of the way through.
All this is cavilling in the way, however. Hobsbawm is clear and convincing argument, and does an excellent job of synthesis of all European history during a period of 59 years in a book of 300 pages. I can not wait for the start of the left wing.

The age of revolution: Europe 1789-1848 Overview

Between 1789 and 1848 the world was transformed by both the French Revolution and also by the Industrial Revolution that originated in Britain. This "Dual Revolution" created the modern world as we know it. Hobsbawm traces the transformation brought about in every sphere of European life by the Dual Revolution - in the conduct of war and diplomacy; in the new industrial areas and on the land; among peasantry, bougeoise, and aristocracy; in methods of government and of revolution; in science, philosophy and religion; in literature and the arts. But above all he sees this as the period when industrial capitalism established itself in Western Europe and when Europe established the domination over the rest of the world it was to hold for a century.

Now in paperback, the #1 San Francisco Chronicle bestseller that is an enchanting and lyrical look at the life, the traditions, and the cuisine of Tuscany, in the spirit of Peter Mayle's A Year in Provence.

Frances Mayes entered a wondrous new world when she began restoring an abandoned villa in the spectacular Tuscan countryside. There were unexpected treasures at every turn: faded frescos beneath the whitewash in her dining room, a vineyard under wildly overgrown brambles in the garden, and, in the nearby hill towns, vibrant markets and delightful people. Having traveled extensively through Morocco, I was initially concerned about a book of Casablanca, which is probably the least interesting city in that country. However, Tahir Shah writes that brings life in a completely unexpected, and his poker face British approach to local superstition makes a fun read. At the time of the budget, as he describes it really on your nerves, get, what, etc., with the endless tantrums jinn, among other things, I never metin any of my travels in that country (yes, I have been deserted by the inhabitants of modern accommodation in the underworld). His inability to put his foot down and take things seem excessive, not to the holy woman who hardly complained about, despite the unimaginable conditions of life, apparently in a single room and sleep on a mattress on the floor along with smelly 2 young children for time without end to crawl the entire site with the creepy fauna,Illiterate domestic workers and shady characters ... His description of life at home is alive and vibrant, with interesting historical references, and the story was good. This is a thoroughly enjoyable book that I would not recommend to anyone traveling to Morocco o!

The Caliph's House: A Year in Casablanca Overview

In the tradition of A Year in Provence and Under the Tuscan Sun, acclaimed English travel writer Tahir Shah shares a highly entertaining account of making an exotic dream come true. By turns hilarious and harrowing, here is the story of his family’s move from the gray skies of London to the sun-drenched city of Casablanca, where Islamic tradition and African folklore converge–and nothing is as easy as it seems….

Inspired by the Moroccan vacations of his childhood, Tahir Shah dreamed of making a home in that astonishing country. At age thirty-six he got his chance. Investing what money he and his wife, Rachana, had, Tahir packed up his growing family and bought Dar Khalifa, a crumbling ruin of a mansion by the sea in Casablanca that once belonged to the city’s caliph, or spiritual leader.

With its lush grounds, cool, secluded courtyards, and relaxed pace, life at Dar Khalifa seems sure to fulfill Tahir’s fantasy–until he discovers that in many ways he is farther from home than he imagined. For in Morocco an empty house is thought to attract jinns, invisible spirits unique to the Islamic world. The ardent belief in their presence greatly hampers sleep and renovation plans, but that is just the beginning. From elaborate exorcism rituals involving sacrificial goats to dealing with gangster neighbors intent on stealing their property, the Shahs must cope with a new culture and all that comes with it.

Endlessly enthralling, The Caliph’s House charts a year in the life of one family who takes a tremendous gamble. As we follow Tahir on his travels throughout the kingdom, from Tangier to Marrakech to the Sahara, we discover a world of fierce contrasts that any true adventurer would be thrilled to call home.

Tales of Old Japan (with linked TOC) Overview

This ebook is complete with 38 original illustrations along with a linked Table of Content and linked illustration index & footnotes making navigation quicker and easier.

Tales of Old Japan is an anthology of short stories, compiled by Algernon Bertram Freeman-Mitford, Lord Redesdale, writing under the better known name of A.B. Mitford. These stories focus on the varying aspects of Japanese life in centuries past. The book, which was written in 1871, is still regarded as an excellent introduction to Japanese literature and culture, by virtue of its ease of access and supplemental notes by the writer. Also included are the author's eyewitness accounts of a selection of Japanese rituals, ranging from the harakiri and marriage to a selection of sermons. This book had a lasting influence on the Western perception of Japanese history, culture and society, particularly because of just one widely known tale about samurai revenge.

I read a few chapters and so far the book is fun and engaging. I give the book 4 stars only to avoid dragging down the average rating. I can not imagine how one can be present as an indication of a serious put-down of the French, is basically an analysis affectionate tongue-in-cheek weaknesses of French self-deprecating style that is at least equally important, by implication, that of the British author of fellow and their ways. The main impetus for my review, but it is clear warning of potential usersthat the Kindle edition is done very badly. Missing and / or is terribly out of sequence and transcription. Not everyone who read these things? Talk to the Snail: Ten Commandments for Understanding the French Overview

Have you ever walked into a half-empty Parisian restaurant, only to be told that it's Â"completÂ"? Attempted to say Â"merci beaucoupÂ" and accidentally complimented someone's physique? Been overlooked at the boulangerie due to your adherence to the bizarre foreign custom of waiting in line? Well, you're not alone. The internationally bestselling author of A Year in the Merde and In the Merde for Love has been there too, and he is here to help. In Talk to the Snail, Stephen Clarke distills the fruits of years spent in the French trenches into a truly handy (and hilarious) book of advice. Read this book, and find out how to get good service from the grumpiest waiter; be exquisitely polite and brutally rude at the same time; and employ the language of l'amour and le sexe. Everything you need is here in this funny, informative, and seriously useful guide to getting what you really want from the French.
