I went to Japan alone this summer for a period of 25 days. This book was very helpful to prepare for the trip and I think that is where the book is the best. They give nice tips, thoughts and ideas about where to stay, how long you go.

However, once in Japan, the book is not particularly useful. Any information centers in the cities of Japan are really good and can be best maps and local attractions like the book. But it is still a must read, I wouldsay, three five months ago, before the trip. Furthermore, at least a cursory reading of six or seven months before the trip, as we have to think a lot of things to be well prepared.
